Optical density of synaptophysin immunofluorescence (IF) around perikarya was measured as indicated in Figure 2B and expressed in gray scale levels as the group means (± SD). Three sections per rat from L3/L4 segments were chosen for analysis. The mean numbers of large neurons per rat, selected for further analysis, were 28, 33 and 25 in the intact (n = 6), spinal (n = 6), and spinal trained (n = 5) rats, respectively.
