Elevated C5a levels in serum of brain-injured C57BL/6 ( fB +/+) mice are significantly attenuated in factor B gene-deficient ( fB -/-) mice lacking a functional alternative complement pathway. Serum samples from brain-injured fB+/+ and fB-/- mice of the C57BL/6 strain (n = 6 per group and time-point) and from normal C57BL/6 mice (control; n = 4) and normal fB-/- mice (n = 4) were analyzed by ELISA specific for mouse C5a.
