Nissl-stained ganglion cell layers from control and experimental eyes. Each panel is representative of the mid-central superior retina of the inbred lines shown. Two weeks after optic nerve crush, the retinas exhibit a loss of cells with larger somas and nuclei with prominent nucleoli, features characteristic of retinal ganglion cells. DBA/2J, SJL/J, and BALB/cByJ mice exhibit resistant, moderately resistant, and susceptible phenotypes to optic nerve crush, respectively. Magnification 200×.
